Jin Zhilin
Brigade Secretary of the Yugeng People's Commune, Huailai County, Hebei Province
1960
Oil on cardboard (restored and framed)
15 1/8'' x 12 1/2''

Painted during the communalization of agriculture known as the Great Leap Forward (1958-1960). Jin spent a great deal of time in the countryside documenting this period. This piece demonstrates the influence of contemporary Soviet social realism on Chinese art before the Sino-Soviet split of 1960. Russian painter Constantine Maximov taught oil painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing from 1955 to 1957, where he and Jin were associates.
