Zhang Zhixin was a young woman who opposed the radical Maoist factions during the Cultural Revolution. Zhang wrote anti-Cultural Revolution material and therefore was sentenced to death. Her throat was cut to stop her from yelling anti-Cultural Revolution statements. Song created the series of woodcuts at great personal danger during the height of Cultural Revolutionary radicalism and hid them until after the Cultural Revolution ended in 1976.
